Are You Choosing To Achieve Success and Thrive?

G'day Reader

As we change seasons through May, it's the perfect time to review how you're doing what you do, so you can better results, succeed and thrive.

Here's the thing.

Once upon a time, we could set businesses on auto-pilot and stand back.

That's not been the case for a while.

Over the last 5 years we've watched:

  • record-breaking levels of businesses closing their doors forever
  • record-breaking levels of founders and leaders burning out
  • record-breaking levels of staff leaving jobs & the industry

These are the symptoms of us not operating in harmony with the world around us. Not matching what we do and how we do, well enough to thrive.

If you're stuck or struggling, it might be because you:

  • what you're doing isn't resonating with your customers
  • how you're doing it isn't engaging your employees
  • why you're doing it has lost meaing for you

I recommend to mentoring clients that they review their strategy every 3 months, not just in business and career, but in life too.

Now, you might not change a thing, if all aspects of those things are good.

But, in most cases, there are aspects of business, career and life that you might want to see:

  • improved results
  • a better outcome
  • a different outcome

We are all on a journey towards something.

The common 'something' at the end of this 'journey of life', is death!

But what we do with our lives, our careers and businesses between now and then, is a choice we can make. That's the wonder of being alive.

Here's where I'm going to be contraversial (unlike me! 😉)

If you're currently stuck, struggling or even just surviving, then you're choosing it.

How the f&#k can that be the case, I hear some of you saying!

Well, it can be an uncomfortable realisation, that by not taking action to change what you're experiencing, you're actually choosing to maintain it.

You see, what you've been doing, the actions you've been taking that may have worked in the past, for some reason, aren't working any more.

There are various reactions to this. Some people:

  • work harder to do those same actions more intensely
  • shoot from the hip, trying things one day to the next
  • turn to alcohol or other substances to relieve the pain

But, in most cases (and the record-breaking failures support this):

  • it results in cashflow disappearing
  • energy and vitality being replaced with burnout
  • ends to careers, losses of businesses and often homes

So, how can you choose a better outcome?

Well, we know the trading environment, trading conditions have changed.

In fact, we can see, just by opening our eyes, that the world is changing.

The reality is that it's always been changing. But now...

...it's changing faster and more unpredictably than at any other time in modern history.

That itself doesn't mean you're going to fail, though it's worth saying that less than 10% of businesses survive more than ten years (which has been the case for decades). Nothing lasts forever!

But you can dance with the changing world around you.

As well as being a founder for 12 years and an internationally headhunted CEO of multi-site groups, I spent 2-3 years as a CMO & Strategy Director in a UK FTSE100 listed company.

That's where I learnt to dance with the external environment and then successfully applied what I learnt as a CEO and later as a founder.

This 'dancing' metaphor suggests we 'move in alignment with' our dancing partner, and it's leading!

We flow,
We respond,
We move in harmony...
...or we stand on their toes.

The choice is ours.

And sometimes we need somebody else to teach us how to dance.

G'day Reader Could the world have got any more crazy than it has already been in the last 5 years? Well, it was turned upside down (economically) last week and the ripples are turning into tsunamis around the globe. Now, I hate to tell you I told you so, but... ...I have been saying that the world isn't going to return to the old normal ever because we're witnessing changes in the global power structure and what's coming around the corner will be felt in our industry in the coming months....
